Refractor Engine was developed by DICE in the late 1990s. It was created to power the Battlefield series, starting with Battlefield 1942, which was released in 2002. The engine facilitated large-scale multiplayer battles and realistic environmental interactions, setting a new standard for first-person shooters at the time.
